Job Responsibilities
We are looking for a few search researchers with strong background in information retrieval and machine learning to join the Yahoo Web Search International Relevance Team. Your essential responsibility is to focus on improving the search relevance for international languages and regions. This extremely challenging task requires a good understanding of not only the general relevance technology, but also how languages differ around the world and how the usage of the web and search engines changes from region to region. As a senior member of the team you will play a leading role in project/product design and development. Your long term responsibility includes deep understanding and analyzing the search relevance issues, mining the large corpora of web text data and query logs, designing and developing better ways to improve search relevance, which may include machine learning in ranking, natural language processing, entity extraction, and text classification. In short term, you will start with certain internationalization project of existing Yahoo search technologies for which the extensive machine learning and linguistic analysis knowledge and experience are needed. A suitable candidate for this position will be a highly motivated person with innovated ideas and solid coding skills, who will be able to work closely with other team members and collaborate with International engineering team and various parts of general relevance teams.

Minimum Job Qualifications
* Experience in statistical modeling, machine learning, computational linguistics, NLP, feature extraction, and data mining, ideally on a Web scale.
* Experience or interest in search engines and information retrieval.
* Solid statistical knowledge and intuition.
* Fluency in Python, Perl, or another scripting language desired.
* Experience in C or C++.
* Strong communication and collaboration skills to work with people from a variety of technical background.

Preferable Job Qualifications

The LBNL Future Technologies Group (FTG) is a research group with projects in the following areas: operating systems for petascale systems, parallel programming models and compilers, performance modeling, and performance evaluation of parallel systems. The overarching goal of the group is to enable computational science through the design and development of hardware and software systems that allow application scientists to more effectively use high end machines. As such, members of FTG work closely with application scientists throughout the DOE Office of Science community (e.g., climate modeling, astrophysics, fusion simulation, life sciences and nanoscience), with faculty and students from the Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences Department at U.C. Berkeley, and with the NERSC production computing facility. Group members have access to leading-edge production computing platforms as well as hardware prototypes of experimental systems. FTG members have a strong history of publications in top journals and conferences and have developed software systems that are broadly used outside the group. Current FTG projects include: the UPC language and compiler project, the APEX-Map benchmarking project, ultra-scale performance evaluation projects, and FastOS Operating System projects.

Description

We are currently hiring for several positions in the Future Technologies Group at Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL FT). I have attached a brief description of each open position below, but we are interested in strong candidates in all areas. Please pass this notice along to anyone that you think would be a strong candidate that might be interested in joining our team. The application deadline is Jan 14, 2007, but an early application is encouraged as the positions remain open only until filled. Successful candidates can begin work immediately (pending normal application procedures).

1. Parallel IO and storage. ORNL FT is seeking a staff, post-Doctoral, or advanced Masters-level researcher to study revolutionary techniques in parallel IO, including IO middleware, file system design and optimization, transparent access over long-distance fiber networks, next-generation storage protocols, as well as IO performance characterization, modeling and prediction. Accesses to some of the world's largest supercomputers will be made available to enable practical and impactful research. The ideal candidate would have expertise in two or more of the aforementioned areas; have a strong publication history; and, a proven record in developing system software.

2. Operating Systems for HPC. ORNL FT is seeking a post-Doctoral or advanced Masters-level researcher to study cutting-edge techniques in operating systems, such as virtualization, kernel design, and cache/memory management. Expertise is particularly sought after to perform OS research and development that leads to a scalable single system image and adaptive software for large-scale supercomputers. The ideal candidate would be an expert in operating systems, have some HPC experience, have a strong publication history, and a proven record in developing system software.

3. Performance prediction, analysis, and optimization. ORNL FT is seeking a staff, post-Doctoral or advanced Masters-level researcher to study revolutionary approaches to performance prediction, analysis, and optimization on some of the world's largest supercomputers. The ideal candidate would be an expert in performance prediction (analytical, simulation, benchmarking), analysis, and optimization of real-world HPC applications, have a strong publication history, and a proven record in developing software tools (e.g., interconnect simulators, scalable performance tools) that assist in these activities.

4. Heterogeneous architectures. ORNL FT is seeking a post-Doctoral or advanced Masters-level research to study innovative approaches to software systems for heterogeneous architectures, such as STI CELL, Graphical Processing Units, Clearspeed, FPGAs, and others. These software systems include OS level constructs for resource management and scheduling, and programming models that provide productivity and performance. The ideal candidate would have experience in using heterogeneous architectures, a strong publication history, and a proven record in developing system software.

5. Software developer. ORNL FT is seeking a Bachelors or Masters-level researcher to assist our team in the development of experimental software for high performance computing. The ideal candidate will have proven record with C or C++ on system software (e.g., Linux kernel, device drivers, runtime systems like IO or MPI), some experience with java, python, and system administration, demonstrated success working in a collaborative team environment, and occasionally contributed to publications.

6. Summer internships. FT has a number of open positions in various areas for internships during the summer of 2008. Candidates are expected to be pursuing a Ph.D. in Computer Science or a closely related discipline.
